Geneseo, Ill. – Springfield Armory announced a new duty pistol targeting the law enforcement market called the Echelon.

Designed from the ground up to be a sidearm suitable for peace officers, the new Springfield Echelon offers a broad range of features, including a new optics mounting system called the “VIS.”

The new mounting system is a universal attachment design that eliminates the need to use mounting plates common to most handguns. This allows a law enforcement agency to use any optic they desire while increasing reliability in the system.

A Springfield Armory insider stated the company may aggressively pursue contracts with U.S. law enforcement agencies. This strategy worked extremely well for Glock during the 1980s and 90s. In recent years, Smith & Wesson and SIG SAUER have attempted to break Glock’s grip on the market segment, though how successful the companies have been is unclear.

With a new sidearm from Springfield Armory, police departments will have another option from which to choose – a situation that will likely drive prices down as the competition increases.
